Belgian Registration Exploratory Committee of the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America

It is my pleasure to serve on the Belgian Registration Exploratory Committee of the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America. As explained in our committee report, the registration of Belgian Tervuren, Sheepdog, Malinois and Laekenois under the auspices of the American Kennel Club is quite complicated due to the separation of these dogs into four different breeds, while most of the rest of the world maintains them as varieties of the same breed (whether or not they allow intervariety breeding). Increasing homozygosity of the gene pools of dog breeds and shrinking populations is increasingly becoming a cause for concern for dedicated breeders. This proposal to make AKC registration policy more consistent with the genetic make up of our dogs has been approved by both the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America and the American Belgian Malinois Club. The information and illustration of the committee’s findings is posted here for informational purposes
